More information and advice

Sub-base levelling procedures - When preparing to lay tarmacadam for a car park, playground or road, it is essential to ensure that the surface upon which the tarmac will be laid is as level as possible.  This is accomplished by using a stable layer of gravel as a sub-base beneath the tarmac to prevent it from sagging.  This sub-base layer will need to be carefully levelled and checked for inconsistencies.

Throughout the process of preparing the area for paving, the sub-base layer will have to be examined frequently throughout the process to ensure consistency.  The tarmac contractors will usually place a straight-edged solid timber spanning from the kerb of the road over to the edging kerb, and then 'dipping' - which means taking a measurement of the distance from the base of the straight-edge to the sub-base's compacted surface.   In most cases, the levelness of the sub-base needs to be accurate down to ± 10mm.  Even though a measuring tape could be used to read the 'dip', in our opinion that particular method demands far too much bending in order to accurately read the measurement on the tape.  For that reason, Regency Drives Ltd uses a much more effective strategy.
