Joining new Surfaces to Existing ones.

Sometimes new tarmac driveways, forecourts or footpaths need to be laid adjacent to an existing road or some other area that was previously surfaced with tarmacadam.  In larger projects, tarmac surfacing Glasgow may need to be laid in sections.  In a wide area such as a car park, several strips, known as screeds, need to be laid alongside each other.  When screeds are laid on after another without much time passing in between, the seam between the two can be left untreated, especially if the material is still warm.  The new screed is simply laid next to the previous one and the two are rolled together.  The still-tacky tarmac binds the two screeds together nicely, forming a strong and invisible joint.

Joining new tarmac to old is a more difficult process that requires special treatment to prevent water from entering the joint and potentially causing the layers to separate.  The freezing and thawing action of the water can easily damage the tarmac by lifting the surface from the base underneath.  This is why it is essential for tarmac contractors to ensure that joints between old and new material are properly sealed.

The correct way to join new tarmac surfacing to an older layer is to neatly cut the edge of the old material and them prime it with a special vertical jointing compound.  After the fresh layer of tarmac has been laid and properly compacted, the joint between the two surfaces needs to be sealed using a little-known substance, which is usually referred to by the name 'cold pour' or something much the same. Wherever any multi-layered tarmac must be joined, the joints have to be staggered every 300mm, rather than constructed as a sole joint that runs uninterrupted across the entire section of tarmac contractors Edinburgh at full depth.
