The method that is usually applied when laying a tarmac area and surface is that the material is pre heated and is installed while it is hot (extremely hot and viscous). It is then levelled and compacted very quick before it has time to reduce in temperature. It is then left to cool so that each particle is bound and it sets to its rigid state. The tarmac with large aggregates (the bitmac which is usually about 60-70mm) is used as the road base or binder courses and the smaller type aggregates for the final top layer known as the surface or wearing course. The general idea with a tarmac driveway, car park or road is that the contractors will ensure that smaller aggregates are used from the bottom progressively up to the top layer which is the finished surface.
